Biographie

Gernot Güntherodt (*1943 in Themar/Thuringia) is a German physicist [1] and since 2011 Professor Emeritus [2] of Experimental Physics / Solid State Physics at RWTH Aachen University [3] in Aachen, Germany.

Academic Career

Gernot Güntherodt, brother of Hans-Joachim Güntherodt [4], Prof.em. of University of Basel, Switzerland († 2014), earned his Diploma in Physics in 1968 at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and received there as well his doctorate in 1973 with Peter Wachter and Georg Busch at the Laboratory of Solid State Physics [5]. After a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY (1974 – 1975) and a Research Assistentship at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart (1975 – 1980), he became in 1977 a permanent Staff Member at the MPI. In 1979 he followed a call as Professor at the University of Cologne [6]. From 1987 until his status of Emeritus in 2011 Güntherodt was Professor and Director at the II. Physikalisches Institut/Chair A [7] at RWTH (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule) [3] in Aachen. Thereafter he served 2014 – 2016 as consultant to the group of Stuart Parkin at the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics in Halle (Saale).

From 2009 until 2017 Güntherodt was Chairman of the Division of Magnetism and of the Working Group Magnetism (AGM) of the German Physical Society (DPG). He held visiting positions as Guest Professor at various institutions, among them IBM Research Laboratories in Yorktown Heights/NY und in Almaden/CA, AT&T Bell Labs, Stanford University, University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven/Belgium and Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle (Saale).

Gernot Güntherodt is internationally well known for his dedicated research on highly correlated electron systems, nanomagnetism, quantum spin systems, spin dynamics and spintronics. His research findings are published in almost 500 peer-reviewed international scientific journals [8][9]. He was Co-Editor of three professional journals of physics and of seven Springer Series books Topics in Applied Physics (II – VIII) together with Manuel Cardona. In 2009 the American Physical Society (APS) appointed him as Fellow [10].
